What Countries Consume the Most ‘Legal Highs’?

Recently, legal highs have been in the news. What countries are taking the largest volume of legal highs or new psychoactive substances? The latest research from the Global Drug Survey has revealed that these designer drugs are all over the world.


Status: Laws are being introduced from time to time. And one of the latest developments is the blanket ban being implemented in the United Kingdom, stating that mere possession of NPS will put people in jail for up to seven years. The problem with the law is that it is not easy to enforce because new ones are being introduced from time to time. There is also the risk of driving their market into the underground.


According to the latest study, about 11.6% of the UK population has bought some mind-altering substances in the last year, and the statistics are closely followed by the United States. The countries with the lowest recorded legal high purchases in the last year are Italy (1.3), Spain (3.4) and Germany (3.6).


What’s the latest study revealing? It simply reveals that global rise in the use of such substances in all parts of the world. But with the latest of them being introduced almost on a weekly basis and the wavering laws concerning them just adds to the fact that they are hard to police or control.


And then another problem is that the latest ban also comes with issues. It is driving away the market to the underground and endangering the public’s health and lives even worse than before.


The latest survey has asked more than 100,000 respondents in 50 countries. In the report, those interested to discover about the prevalence of legal highs in different countries can see the places where they are popular.

Those percentages that they have revealed are percentage of the users that bought NPS items in the past year. In the study, it also highlights that the United Kingdom is the top country where there is the largest volume in the population using the herbal highs. The findings are somehow ironic because these substances are illegal in the country.
