Concentrates are simply stated, another form of hash. Various methods either mechanical or chemical are used to remove the desirable, resinous compounds from the otherwise inert and unwanted plant material. These compounds are what create the highs or other feelings or benefits associated with any given cannabinoid. In this case we’re talking about CBD, which as most folks know doesn’t generate a “buzz” so to speak, but does have many benefits. 

Now concentrates go by many descriptors and names. Usually what these descriptors refer to is an extraction method or a consistency. For instance, we carry a lot of shatter here. Shatter is a popular product because the consistency is anywhere between a hard candy and a sticky gummy. While these descriptions may sound delicious, it’s not for eating.  This texture is often desirable because it’s easy to use in bangers, e-rigs, bowls and joints. Many other concentrate types can be overly sticky due to certain terpenes present in the product.

Shatter is processed in a vacuum oven after a chemical extraction. This vacuum oven purging of all leftover chemicals is what gives it its candy like snappiness and swiss cheese holes at times. When the “slabs” come out of the vacuum oven, you can see the holes of gas that have escaped and popped while releasing from the cannabinoids and terpenes below. 

Other consistencies you may be familiar with include diamonds, crystals, sauce, terp sauce, wax, budder etc. The truth about many of these products is that some of them are made in the same way as shatter, however the makeup of cannabinoids and terpenes are different, which changes the texture. For instance, did you know that the smell of lemons in your weed is from a very common terpene called limonene? Well, this terpene also works as a mild solvent in your cannabinoids, so anything high in limonene that you extract is generally saucier than something with no limonene present. In this way, the product you end with is in most cases directly related to the product you started with. No skimping on quality is how you make great concentrates. 

There’s also crystals or diamonds that are made in a totally different fashion that shatter, budder and wax. Diamonds are crashed out of a solution using varying specific temperatures over time. That’s a confusing way to say that those crystals are made in the same way that rock candy is made. If you’ve ever made the children's candy, you’ll know that you supersaturate hot water with sugar, then provide something for them to catalyze around, say a stick or a piece of string. As the water cools, the sugar reforms around the thing that is most receptive, the stick or string with much more surface area per inch than the glass. 

Now imagine you use a solvent such as butane and strip all desirable compounds from plant material. With specific temperatures over time you can crash the compounds out of the solution and into the bottom of the jar, forming pure crystals. These crystals are nearly completely pure cannabinoids. 

These are meant to be dabbed. If you’re not sure what dabbing is, looking up a few videos is probably in your near future. But, in short, it’s heating up an element and smoking hashish or shatter or crystals or budder off of it, usually in a bong style piece that stoners call a “Rig” when it’s for dabbing. Most folks dab of quartz these days. Titanium or other materials are a thing of the past and should be avoided. Dabbing can be a bit of investment. A rig is like mentioned before, very similar to a bong. The difference is they are usually smaller. The smaller the rig, the more flavor you will taste is a maxim a lot of heady stoners go by when selecting their pieces. Along with that rig you’re going to need a banger. The banger is a quartz bucket that you put your dab in. To heat that banger you need a torch and butane and then you need a dabber, which is a glass or titanium hash tool for scooping and dabbing material. After dropping your dab in the heated banger you’ll want a carb cap as well. Carb caps help you regulate airflow and heat while your hashish is sizzling in your banger. Like I said, there is a learning curve, and you don’t want to be dabbing too hot. That’s not healthy. You also want to make sure you’re safe with your tools. 

If all of that is overwhelming and you don’t want to dive deep into the world of dabbing but you still want to get the punch of concentrates into your session, any concentrates can also be used as a potent little bowl topper or a mix-in for your joint or spliff. If you top a bowl with it, it’s nice to melt it all down over the weed and slowly roast it with the bowl. In our joint just sprinkle it around and expect a greasy, heavy hitter.
