Grinders
True stoners know exactly how difficult it is to break up top shelf weed by hand. It can be a messy, sticky job and it really makes a difference in the end product of your smoke. If you’re smoking the type of weed that we carry in our CBD hemp shop, it’s sticky and dense. It’s the kind of nugs that require the help of a grinder to get it broken up. Here at Express Highs we’ve got a grinder for every preference. Airflow is important to getting those clouds you expect, and we’re here to save your hands and wrists some stress with tons of options. Whether you want something humble or heady, we’ve got you covered with a great deal on everything you need to enjoy your herb. Did I mention we also ship cannabis straight to your door anywhere it's legal in Europe?
Why break up your weed at all? Well, it makes a lot of sense to grind your buds. When you pack a bowl, a big chunk of nug doesn’t really light and burn smoothly. It kind of just smoulders. When you grind up that nug to a consistent texture you’re allowing air to flow better into your packed bong, bubbler, bowl or joint. That airflow lets the herb burn more evenly and smoothly. Instead of smouldering it produces thick plumes of smoke that you expect out of a well packed bowl. Did I mention that we carry all of those things in the shop here as well? Honestly, it’s a one stop shop here at Express Highs. You can buy your weed online and pair it with everything you need to enjoy it including a grinder, some papers or a bowl and even a bit of hash to top off the experience, and the best part is that it gets shipped right to your door, discreetly as always.
There are several types of marijuana grinders commonly available and of course we carry a selection of each. What most people think of when it comes to a grinder has spinning teeth or blades. They masticate the material over a sieve that is the perfect size for airflow within the bud. It falls through the sieve, you collect it and pack your piece with it. They can even come with “pollen” catches. They catch all the kief through a screen so you can have a hashy treat anytime you want. If you’re unsure what that means, kief is the broken trichome heads from cannabis. These heads contain all the oils (THC, CBD etc) that folks are really looking to get when they purchase weed.
These spinning grinders come in lots of materials like acrylic, aluminium and more. A cheap acrylic grinder is absolutely fine for most applications. If you’re not interested in collecting your kief or you’re on a budget it might be the way to go. For those with a bit more budget, a heavier metal grinder could be a nice option. We’ve got those as well. They all work roughly the same but some stoners will find certain grinders to be easier on their hands or to grind to a better consistency for their preferences. Most folks who smoke a lot have several grinders. It’s smart to grab a couple types because you’re not sure which you’ll prefer until you try it.
Two part grinders simply grind up the weed between the teeth. Three part grinders are the kind with kief catches on the bottom. These are slightly more expensive usually. For an old school aesthetic, wood grinders look cool and many times function very well. They’ve been used for decades reliably by smokers just like you.
Another type of grinder we carry at Express Highs is so small it fits in your wallet. Credit card sized sieve grinders are often like a tiny cheese grater for your weed. These operate incredibly simply, by rubbing the bud on the screen, you break off small pieces that fit through the sieve, just like a cheese grater. The biggest advantages to this type of setup are that they take up very little space, they are incredibly discrete and they are cheap. Unlike other grinders this type is super easy to hide. I don’t recommend sticking them in your wallet after use however, because it could end up being a bit of a sticky situation unless you clean it well. The good part is they are also really easy to clean.
Cleaning a grinder clogged with sticky CBD trichomes can be an annoying task, but with the right tools, it can be done pretty easily. Start by disassembling the grinder, separating the individual pieces to expose the sticky, gunky spots. Next, use a soft-bristled brush or a small, dry paintbrush to gently sweep away any loose trichomes. Pack those up on top of a bowl and smoke them!
For more stubborn residue, soak that thing in isopropyl alcohol. Let it sit for a few minutes to allow the solvent to break down the trichomes. Then, use a cotton swab or a small cloth to wipe away the residue. Do this until the grinder is free of sticky trichomes. To remove any remaining residue, use a toothbrush or a small, soft-bristled brush to scrub the grinder pieces with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Keep it clean to keep it grinding. By following these steps, you'll be able to keep your grinder in good working order and ensure it continues to perform its best for your buds.
When using your grinder, regardless of the type, a couple simple steps will make it work all the better for you. For starters, don’t load your grinder with stems. Break your bud material off the stem and load that into the grinder. Stems contain very little active resins and can cause some annoying issues. In particular if you’re rolling a joint, blunt or spliff out of your high grade weed, stems can pop through the side of your wrap. This makes it so that you don’t have a seal and can’t inhale properly through the roll up. No one wants that. Joint, blunts and spliffs are where a grinders’ use really shines. You see, a properly ground herb is key to rolling yourself a joint that doesn’t “canoe.” Canoeing is the annoying tendency for a joint to burn unevenly down its length. When it does that it burns way too fast. When you grind your weed you minimise the amount of canoeing because it burns more evenly than a bunch of pinched off nugs of varying sizes done by some wooks’ fingernails. The consistency of your herb is important for how it burns.
